Small Scare with Luxor Yesterday

I was in a funk all day yesterday - so I decided to try to take a nap. I noticed Luxor was really grooming his self for a while, so I looked up and he had blood on his chest and leg. Not a lot, but enough to make me freak out (which isn't very much anyway). So I checked him all over, no cuts. I checked Stoli, no cuts. They hadn't been fighting. His lip looked pink. I let him be, Anthony and I watched him grooming later in the day and it happened again. We cleaned it up right away so the blood didn't get on his fur and make him groom harder. It still looked like his lip but I noticed his tongue was red too.

We called his vet, they weren't too worried, they said cats sometimes scratch themselves if their claws are sharp. Luxor HATES when we clip his nails, and I waited too long - I clipped them yesterday. All of them.

I went to bed and it happened again, his fur was wet he was grooming so much. I washed him down and then dried him then played with him to get his mind off of grooming. I had nightmares all night and all day I got all queasy thinking about the blood.

I would be REALLY worried if something else was wrong with him. But he's eating well, playing hard, sleeping normally, litter box is normal, and only grooming a little more than normal - because of the blood.

Nostalgia Saturday

well sort of, I have been going through my grandmothers vintage crochet books (I'm so lucky to have them!) and some of the ads in them are PRICELESS. I decided to have Nostalgia Saturday be a tribute to this old, and sometimes sexist ads. Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules.

So for today: a preview.

Most ads will be from "The WorkBasket", Volume 17, No. 6, 1952

Luxor photo session

Well hello there, I see you have a camera - did you know I'm a model? I can be a great model if you just touch up my make up a little.

If you take a closer look you can see I have just a few blemishes. Not many people notice them, but as a model you have to be sure you are always ready for photo sessions.

I see here you have a little bit of make ups here, I'll direct you how to put it on me.

See here, this is how I pucker for my lips paint.

Here I am readying my eyes for the makeups.

How do I look? Am I ready? Do you like my smile? I have a few missing teeths because I runs into stuff when I play and I used to chew on lots of stuff I wasn't supposed to. That doesn't make me less pretty right?

Ok, I'm all pretty! photo time! What? you've been taking pictures all this time? This isn't a reality show!

If they can't. . . . .

Stoli and Luxor are both microchipped with Home Again. We just received an email stating that Stoli's subscription expired, yet we checked the bank and the check cleared days ago. If they can't keep track of my check, how can they keep track of my pet?

On the same vein, there is a bank (Gorham Savings Bank) in town that the outdoor clock NEVER tells the correct time, it's off by at least 5-10 minutes. If they can't keep track of the time, how can they keep track of my money?

just sayin'. . . . . .

How to make a picot stitch

I've started crocheting doilies and I came across a lovely one from one of my grandmother's books that I just had to stitch. Unfortunately there are SO many picots in the pattern and it didn't do a very good job explaining it. I looked it up online and it was a help but I still had to come up with my own way to make the bobbles.

Here's a short tutorial for you on how to make a picot stitch. I hope it is clear and very helpful for you!

1. Here's my chain stitch waiting to make a single crochet in the little 3 chain loop near the middle of the picture. All the picots I looked up start with a single crochet. This one starts in the actual space made by the stitches, not in a stitch.

2. This picture shows the single crochet in the 3 chain loop.

3. To my knowledge, picots can have any number of chains, this one continues the stitch with a chain of 3.

4. Here, I've slipped my needle through the crossbar (horizontal) part of the single crochet as well as the left (front) thread. If you look back to the picture of the single crochet, you'll see it sort of looks like the Pi symbol. The 3 chain is beginning to pull into an arch leaning to the right.

5. Here, I've pulled the thread down and across, preparing it for my next stitch. I found you need to do this to make the bobble appear on the correct side of the pattern. You can see, it's pulled the chain of 3 closer into a cluster.

6. In the final photo, I'm showing you how I pulled the thread through the three loops that were on my hook. The thread had been pulled over the front and secured on the left side of the picot so when I pulled it through, it would keep the picot on the front side of my pattern.
I hope this was helpful, because after all the time I've spent doing these I've found that none of the tutorials that I read were actually intricate enough.

Enjoy!

Finally getting to WORK!

I've been putting it off, but today's my day! I'm making the sculptures for the give away, a couple of orders, some for stock...... I don't like to have greenware sitting around for too long because it's fragile and then there's the cats! So I wait close to firing time to make most of my things.

I took two pictures to show you the porcelain cubes (love that wet porcelain smell!) and my list!

My first doily!

It's not great, but it's a first! I LOVE doilies, after I make my babette blanket I think I'm going to concentrate on doilies. There's something about the vintage books I have of my grandmother's. They are so delicate and intricate!
